Curing the Mate:

It is called "curar el mate" (cure the Mate) to the process of adapting this container to the infusion that it will be destined to hold. Only those made of porous materials admit this process (especially and par excellence those made with a hollowed out calabash, i.e. gourds), since their inner walls will be able to be impregnated with the "spirit of the yerba" making the infusion to mature with an intimate antique touch, as appreciated by the experimented "matero" as the quality of the yerba itself.

Curing your gourd:
A well-cured gourd will bring out Yerba Mate Tea's deep, rich flavor.

Quick Cure Method:
Simply begin using your gourd, it will cure in time.

Better curing Method:
Gently scrape the inside of the gourd with the tip of the bombilla to clean the loose gourd particles.

Fill the gourd half-full with dry loose Yerba Mate Tea.

Add very hot water and let stand for two days.

Gently scrape the gourd out again.

Finally, put the cleaned-out gourd in the sunlight for a day or two until it is completely dry.

It's Cured!! Enjoy!!
